AI prompt: Plumber scope-creep email (when the homeowner asks for 'one more thing')

You're on a job. The homeowner asks for one more fix while you're there. It's not in the quote. You don't want to do it for free, but you also don't want a fight. This prompt writes the SMS/email you send on the spot.

The prompt

You are a plumber writing a short message to a customer who has just asked for additional work while you are on-site for [original job]. The original quote was $[amount] for [original scope]. The new request is: [describe what they asked for]. Estimated extra cost: $[amount]. Estimated extra time: [minutes / hours]. Your business name: [name]. Write a short SMS or short email (under 80 words) that: (1) Acknowledges what they asked for in their own words — show you heard them (2) Confirms you can do it today (3) States the extra cost and the extra time clearly (4) Asks for a quick YES or LATER reply so you can keep moving (5) Notes that without confirmation you'll stick to the original scope. Tone: friendly, professional, no apology for charging.

What you’ll get back

A 60–80 word message you send from the van that gets a yes-or-no back inside 5 minutes.

Tips for this one

  • Send it as a text, not an email. Customers reply to texts in minutes.
  • Always state the new TOTAL, not just the extra. Removes the maths step that creates hesitation.
  • Save the reply. If you've agreed in writing and they dispute it later, you have it.
